Finding your Fit in a Board Role

Written by: Hope Schaefer, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Leadership Initiative

Did you know that every nonprofit organization is required in their bylaws to have at least 3 board members? When you add up how many nonprofits exist throughout our area, that totals up to thousands of board members needed to provide governance, strategic guidance and fiduciary oversight of these organizations. When considering a board position, reflect on what you’re passionate about, what your “why” is and who in the community is doing that work that you may be able to support. That’s a great place to start when considering board service!

Once you’ve reflected on your own passions, it’s time to dive into the key roles of a board member. Understanding your legal, ethical and financial responsibilities in this role will set you up with a strong foundation so you can be active and engaged from the moment you join.  You can bring unique perspective, passion, valuable skills and expertise, and help to increase the reach and visibility of the organization to your personal network.

When you are knowledgeable about what your roles and responsibilities are as a board member and passionate about the organization you represent you will be a strong partner of the Executive Director and will have a significant impact on the organization’s mission. Becoming a board member is a significant responsibility, but when you enter it with awareness, knowledge and passion you will make a difference not only to the organization you choose to support, but to the community at large.
