Appleton Public Library Reopens: A New Chapter for Our Community
On February 15, hundreds of people ventured out in a snowstorm to celebrate and experience the grand opening of the Appleton Public Library. The project was 17 years in the making following a 2008 space-needs study. The $40.4 million renovation, which began in 2022, added 7,000 square feet of space, including co-working areas, creation studios, and an expanded children’s services area. Visitors can now enjoy updated computer stations, self-checkouts, and high-quality meeting rooms—all designed to meet evolving community needs.
“The new library is a space that inspires learning, connection, and discovery,” said Colleen Rortvedt, Library Director. “We can’t wait to see how our community brings it to life.”
As part of the renovation, the Friends of Appleton Library, a separate nonprofit entity, was responsible for raising $12 million in private funds to support the library project. Through fundraising efforts, 625 donors, including more than 30 funds totaling more than $1 million from within the Community Foundation, came together to support the library renovation.
“Our largest gift was $3 million, and our smallest gift was $5,” said Nanci Micke, board president of Friends of Appleton Library. “One of the most heartwarming contributions came from a child’s lemonade stand, which raised $185 to help us reach our fundraising goal.”
The new library offers more than books, it provides spaces where people can gather, collaborate, and create. From children discovering a love of reading to entrepreneurs launching new ventures, the library is a hub for learning and innovation.
“The Community Foundation is honored to celebrate this moment with our community. The new Appleton Public Library is more than a building—it’s a place where people can gather, learn, and explore new possibilities,” said Megan Schuessler, Vice President of Donor Services and Gift Planning.

The community dedication was evident throughout the project. According to Appleton Mayor Jake Woodford, the library is a reflection of the collective effort and care of residents.
“Our new library represents the culmination of decades of work and is the result of the combined efforts and resources of our project team, donors, and the people of Appleton,” added Woodford.
