Chain Reaction: A Collaborative Art Show at the Community Foundation
Art can spark creativity, inspire conversation, and bring people together. The Community Foundation’s latest rotating art display, “Chain Reaction,” does just that. The exhibit, featuring husband-and-wife artists Irineo (Neo) and Valerie Medina, is a testament to collaboration, perspective, and artistic transformation.
Neo and Valerie’s artistic process is a creative visual exchange—Neo begins each piece with abstract printmaking applications, using expressive patterns and textures, while Valerie adds layers of detail with chalk pastels, bringing out hidden elements. Each piece evolves as they build upon one another’s work, much like a chain reaction.
“Abstract work catches people’s attention and allows them to see and interpret it in their own way. I love how everyone finds something different in it—that’s what makes it so powerful,” said Neo.
The “Chain Reaction” series originated in their college years as a way to merge their distinct artistic styles. Neo’s free-flowing, instinctive technique contrasts with Valerie’s precise, detail-oriented approach, resulting in a dynamic balance of movement and structure.
While this is their first exhibit with the Community Foundation, Neo and Valerie are deeply involved in community-driven art projects. Neo is the founder of Paint the City, an initiative that brings young artists together to create public murals, and Valerie leads Project Purpose, which provides creative opportunities for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities. Both projects have received grants from funds within the Community Foundation.
“We’re thrilled to display some of Neo and Valerie’s pieces because they are so community-focused and always reminding us of the transformative power of art as a tool for empowerment and inclusion”, said Director of Community Engagement Carolyn Desrosiers.
We are honored to feature “Chain Reaction” in our space through the end of February. We invite you to visit and experience this collaboration for yourself. You can also explore more of their artwork on Instagram to see how their creativity continues to evolve.
