Restoring Stony Brook: Community Comes Together for Restoration Efforts
The Friends of Stony Brook (FOSB) is a volunteer-driven group dedicated to restoring Stony Brook, the only clear, cold-water stream in Calumet County. With generous funding from the Chilton Area Community Foundation, FOSB organized two restoration days that brought together local fishing clubs, Trout Unlimited chapters, and community members. This collaborative effort aims to protect the trout that call Stony Brook home while providing hands-on opportunities to learn about the ecological significance of this vital resource.
The first restoration project focused on a 2,000-foot stretch of Stony Brook Creek that had become overgrown and difficult to navigate. Thanks to enthusiastic student volunteers from the Chilton Conservation Club, the Chilton National Honor Society, and the Kiel Fishing Club, this area was cleared and restored to ensure natural fish passage and migration. The efforts were further supported by adult volunteers from local high schools, Calumet County, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Fox Valley Trout Unlimited, and the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership, showcasing a true community effort.
The second project was a tree planting event aimed at enhancing the stream habitat. Students from the Chilton Public School District took the lead, planting 16 maple trees along the banks of Stony Brook. This initiative not only improves the habitat for local wildlife but also reinforces earlier restoration construction by stabilizing the stream corridor. Support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Calumet County Land & Water Conservation Department, Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance, Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership, and Fox Valley Trout Unlimited made this tree planting possible.
Through these restoration efforts, the community is not only working to revive Stony Brook but also fostering a deeper connection to the environment. It’s a fantastic example of how collaboration and passion can lead to positive change for our natural resources. Stay tuned for more updates as FOSB continues its vital work in the heart of Calumet County!
