Voices of Men Encourages Action to Stop Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault
After last year’s Voices of Men breakfast, attendees asked organizers to provide examples of specific things to be done daily to help end sexual assault and domestic violence. During today’s breakfast event at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, attended by 1,100 people, organizers announced two new efforts — a poster series called “11 Things Men Can Do” and a Voices of Men Friends Team.
Attendees were asked to put up the posters in locations throughout the community and to be mindful of the actions that are highlighted in each one. You can download the poster series and watch the accompanying videos on the Voices on Men website. The Friends Team seeks male volunteers, either individually or as part of a group, to help at four local domestic abuse shelters.
“Every action I take is a stone in the pond in my communities,” said speaker Joe Samalin, with the human rights group Breakthrough. “What’s your stone?”
The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region was recognized among 54 sponsors of Voices of Men. A community education grant awarded last year helped Voices of Men expand its outreach efforts to seven schools (Lawrence University, four high schools, one middle school and one elementary school), and offer nine education events raising awareness about sexual assault, domestic violence, safety and sexism.
