Donor will match gifts for Legion
An anonymous donor who read about American Legion Post 38’s difficulty in meeting a nearly $115,000 road assessment in Grand Chute has offered $10,000 from his Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region charitable fund to raise matching gifts.
The fund will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000, gifts received by Appleton American Legion Post 38 by Aug. 16. Tax-deductible gifts should be made payable to the WISCONSIN AMERICAN LEGION FOUNDATION, and have POST 38 ROAD FUND noted in the memo portion of the check. Gifts should be mailed to or dropped off at the Appleton American Legion Post 38, Attn: Road Fund at 3220 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, 54914.
Grand Chute has assessed the Legion for planned repaving of the W. College Avenue frontage road that runs past the Appleton American Legion’s Club 38 Bar & Grill, banquet hall and the Don Hawkins American Legion Baseball Field.
Laurel Clewell, the post’s adjutant, said the veterans group hoped to raise some of the money through a series of brat fries and at its annual corn roast on Aug 17. Last year the corn roast event brought in about $2,200. The donor who offered the gift said he regularly supports causes that benefit veterans.
“I read about it in the newspaper and I felt bad for those guys,” the donor said, asking that he remain anonymous. His is one of more than 1,300 charitable funds that people, businesses and organizations have established at the Community Foundation to support a broad range of causes.
