67 more approaches to improving the community

Published on January 24, 2017

2016 brought 67 new approaches to donors improving their community through the Community Foundation. That’s how many new charitable funds were created during the calendar year, bringing the total to 1,430.

Each fund is an expression of the charitable passion of the individual, family, business or other group that has established it. Here are a few examples from among the 67.

The Cody and Harley Splitt Fund for FVTC: Retired Appleton attorney and political activist Esther “Cody” Splitt created a fund in her name and that of her late husband to help Fox Valley Technical College students studying for work in the skilled trades — such as plumbers, carpenters and electricians.

Hannah Fitton Living Your Dreams Scholarship Fund: Appleton North 2010 graduate and competitive swimmer Hannah Fitton wanted to give back for the Margaret Ferris Scholarship for Hard of Hearing Students scholarship she received to go to Colgate University. She became our first scholarship recipient to start a scholarship. Read Hannah’s story.

New Holstein Community Scholarship Fund: Actually just one of 11 New Holstein scholarship funds moved to the Community Foundation. The New Holstein school district had been managing the scholarships on its own and found a better answer at the Community Foundation.

The new funds list includes 25 new scholarships, most named for the individuals or businesses that established them or in whose memory they were established. Others direct support at a particular nonprofit, such as a church, local police department or a historical society.

The truth is, we don’t know the range of causes that will benefit in the future because the possibilities are as limitless as the interests and imaginations of our donors. Nearly half of the new funds are named for the individuals or businesses who established them and will use their charitable funds to support a variety of nonprofits. The choice is theirs and we have fund options to fit every charitable passion. What’s your passion and what will be your charitable legacy?
