Warmth Through Generosity: The Pajama Hero Success Story
With achievements beyond expectations, the Community Clothes Closet wrapped up its Pajama Hero project in early December with remarkable results. A total of 704 brand-new pajamas were donated, and $24,915 was raised to provide over 3,000 sets of pajamas to individuals and families in need this winter. These donations, which surpassed the initial goal of 2,500 sets, included matching funds from the Robert Dohr and Lilas Dohr Current Community Needs Fund, and the Scott Jabas Donor Advised Fund, both within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.
Launching the Pajama Hero Initiative
The Pajama Hero project began with a simple idea: everyone deserves to feel warm and cared for at bedtime. For many families, basic necessities like pajamas are challenging to afford. To fill this gap, the Community Clothes Closet launched a campaign to collect new pajamas for people of all ages.
“Everyone deserves to feel warm and snuggly during the winter, which is why we launched the Be a Pajama Hero campaign,” said Lisa Jones, Community Clothes Closet Executive Director. “Focused on providing new, warm pajamas to both adults and children, the community stepped up in a big way. This incredible support allowed us to give away 3,500 sets of new sleepwear to clients of all ages! For the families receiving these items, it is more than just a pair of pjs. It is about security, warmth, and a good night’s sleep.”
A Mission of Comfort and Care
Since 1980, the Community Clothes Closet has provided free clothing and essential items to individuals and families facing financial hardships. From humble beginnings—a single pair of shoes given to a homeless man by a small church group—the organization now serves more than 10,000 people annually including the working poor, students, returning veterans, the homeless, older adults, and those who have emergency clothing needs because of a fire or flood. Their programs ensure access to clothing, outerwear, and bedding, empowering individuals to thrive with dignity.
A Legacy of Giving
“The Pajama Hero project underscores the power of collaboration and generosity. At the Community Foundation, when a need like this arises, our staff works closely with the nonprofit to truly understand what they need,” said Megan Schuessler, Vice President of Donor Services & Gift Planning. “In sharing this need with our fund advisors, grants from multiple funds were pooled together to fund the entirety of the need. Together, the collective makes the whole.”
